Profile

Research aim and focus

The research group develops methods and tools for production and herd health management for the benefit of farm animal health and welfare in an environmentally and economically sustainable context. The research group develops, gathers and disseminates knowledge of production management, herd health and welfare and creates possibilities for an improved communication between farmers, authorities and the surrounding community.

The main areas of research comprise:

  • Development of methods for farm animal production management, farm animal health and food safety and for on-farm assessment of animal welfare.
  • Development of organic and conventional agricultural production principles, including for instance use of new technologies for feeding, milking, reproduction control and disease surveillance.
  • Analyses of decision patterns of farmers and development of theories for primary consultancy at herd level.
  • Analysis of economic consequences of herd management strategies.

The key disciplines of the research group are production management, veterinary epidemiology, herd diagnostics and animal health economics.

Research perspectives

The research of the group produces knowledge and tools relevant for the chain from consumption to production. The developed production concepts, methods and tools contribute to promoting an economically sustainable farm animal production with high standards of animal welfare and food safety. The research is carried out in an international context and disseminated through publication, education and commercialisation. The results of the research group are presented in form and forum so they can form part of the current social debate and be a basis for research-based service to the public sector.
